In Renaissance Italy, sixteen-year-old Danielle (Drew Barrymore) has been reduced to the level of a servant due to the caprices of her wicked stepmother, Baroness Rodmilla (Anjelica Huston). When Danielle meets Prince Henry (Dougray Scott), they quarrel, but a second encounter, with Danielle dressed as a noblewoman, sees romance blooming.
