John Sullivan is a successful Hollywood director of frothy comedies, but for his next project, he wants to film the book `Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?', a searing indictment of the poverty of the Depression. The studio heads aren't so sure but he sets out on the road, manages to lose them, and meets a failed actress, known only as The Girl. The pair enjoy adventures and fall in love and she learns of his true identity.
